Interesting English
Hi every
one!
This is
Danish Ali and here I bring some interesting things about English.
Hope you
will enjoy reading my new blog.
Let’s start,
What is English???
We all know
very well that English is the most popular language of the world as we know so
far that English is an official language of around 67 countries of the world.
“Not only in the world but it is also called the language of
skies”
In this blog I am not going to tell
you about grammar rules of this language but I will explore some interesting
things about it.
So here we go!
1-The longest words in English
With their meanings:
This is very interesting to know that still
the longest word in English is a controversy among the English experts.
Some of the longest words given here!
“Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis”
This is the longest word in English.
It consist 45 letters and it is a name of a particular lung disease which is
caused by inhaling dust or ash.
But this word is not common in English
speaking therefore it is not considered a longest one.
One of the opinions about the above mentioned
word is that it was deliberately designed to be the longest word in English.
Let’s see some other longest words.
“FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION”
It is also
considered the longest word in English it consist 29 letters and it means “the estimation
of something as valueless”
Here are
some other common longest words,
Deinstitutionalization consist 22 letters and it means “discharging thousands of patients from mental hospital”
Counterrevolutionaries also consist 22 letters and it means “a
movement to counteract revolutionary trends”
2-Interesting pangrams:
A sentence which consist all alphabets
of English is called pangram.
A famous pangram is,
“The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”
We see this sentence is taught in different typing or writing institutes to improve your skill because this sentence includes all English letters from A to Z.
This
is not the only sentence we are going to show you some more interesting
pangrams,
“Pack my box with five
dozen liquor jugs”
“The five boxing wizards jump quickly”
“Jackdaws love my big sphinx of quartz”
"How vexingly quick daft zebras jump!"
3-Interesting
Palindromes:
Palindrome is a kind of
sentence which remains same from both sides forward and backward.
The famous palindrome
is,
“Was it a car or a cat I saw”
Don’t need to be confuse
just remove space between the words you will know what the palindrome is. Let’s
do it.
“wasitacaroracatisaw”
Now read it from both
sides.
Hmmmm interesting!
Let’s have look on other
Palindromes,
“Was it a rat I saw” = “wasitaratisaw”
“A nut for a jar of
tuna” = “anutforajaroftuna”
“Go dog” = “godog”
“No lemon, no melon” = “nolemonnomelon”
“Never odd or even” = “neveroddoreven”
4- Silent words in English
Often we think that if
letter is silent, what is the use of writing it?
Let’s have a look,
Silent letters look
useless in English but they are not because they help the word to be pronounced
correctly or we can say that it helps the word for correct pronunciation.
For example:
In the word fine “e” is silent, if we remove “e” from the word,
the pronunciation would be “fin” (f-in) instead of “fine” (fa-in).
Similarly if we see the
word knowledge where letter “k” is silent.
If we remove “k” from the word, the pronunciation would be “nowledge”
(now-ledge) instead of knowledge (no-ledge)
Similarly there are so
many examples.
The second reason of
silent words is that many words in English derived from other languages
therefore they are same in writing.
For example:
Tsunami is a Japanese word where” t” is silent similarly a word
psychology is Greek word where “p” is silent.
There are many other
words which borrowed from other languages and remain same.
These are some interesting things of English I will write some more in upcoming blogs.
Hope you enjoy this
educational journey.
