Dead Sea interesting story and religious facts

Dead Sea

Have you ever listened a Sea without fish or water that does not sink anyone?

If the answer is no, here I am going to tell you some interesting things about the Dead Sea.

What is Dead Sea?

Dead Sea is a sea in Jordan which is 50 miles long and 11 miles in width and its maximum depth is 1300ft. it is famous for its unique characteristics Such as,

Anyone who goes into the sea keeps floating on it and there is no chance to be sunk.

It is six times more salty than a normal sea.

It is lowest point on the earth.

None of living things found in it.

Normal Sea usually consist 4% to 6% of salt but Dead Sea consist 23% to 25% of salt.

Thus we can imagine how different it is???

Why it is called Dead Sea?

It is called dead sea because none of the living things found in this sea including plants if sometimes some fishes fall down in it from the associated streams, They suddenly die because of its excessive ratio of salt.

Is it a Sea or a lake?

It is also a most asked question of the people who want to know about Dead Sea.

There are two opinions of the people about it.

First opinion states that it is not a sea because it has no link with another sea and it is totally in separate land therefore it is a lake.

But the second opinion states that it is a sea because its water is totally oceanic and it consists salt which is a common characteristic of sea.

The lowest point of the earth

Dead Sea is on the lowest place on the earth. It is approximately 1300ft lower than Normal sea level. No other place on the earth is lower than this area. As you move towards the Dead Sea you will see many boards guiding about how lower you are going from the Sea level unless you reach the lowest point.

Religious background

This is the news for those who think that Dead Sea is a topic of science and it belongs to scientific research but it’s not, because in some religions we also find some beliefs about it.

As approx. 2000 years ago a Jewish historian Josephus also wrote about Dead Sea in his history and still his Dead Sea scrolls are famous.

In Christianity it is believed that Dead Sea was also famous in the era of Jesus and many people used to live near it. In bible Dead Sea has been referred with different names such as salt sea, Sea of Arab and eastern sea.

Islamic point of view

Many of Islamic scholars maintain that there was no sea at this place before the era of Lut A.S (A messenger of God) and they believe that Dead Sea appeared as a result of punishment given by God to the nation of Lut (A.S) for their homosexual act.

The nation of Lut (A.S) used to live near the Dead Sea and they were involved in unnatural sexual activities.

This is the lowest point on the earth as discussed above but once it was not like that it became the lowest place on the earth after God turned it down to punish the guilty people involved in homosexual activities.

In Quran God says

“When Our Decree issued, We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay, spread, layer on layer,-Marked as from thy Lord: Nor are they ever far from those who do wrong.” (Surah Hud: 82-83)

The word upside down shows that this point became the lowest point as a result of punishment.

Not only in Surah e Hud but also in Surah e Hajar we find the ayah discussing about this punishment.

There is much to write about Dead Sea but we close the chapter now, hope you enjoy reading this blog.
